Leaf

The Nissan LEAF electric vehicle was unveiled in Yokohama on the 2nd August 2009.

This product will be the world's first affordable, mass produced fully electric car and underlines Nissan’s intent to be at the forefront of zero emission mobility. Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn introduced the vehicle to the world's press:

"We have been working tirelessly to make this day a reality - the unveiling of a real-world car that has zero - not simply reduced - emissions. It's the first step in what is sure to be an exciting journey - for people all over the world, for Nissan and for the industry."

Key characteristics of the LEAF include:

1) Zero-emission power train and platform
2) Affordable pricing
3) Distinctive design
4) Latest Lithium Ion battery technology
5) Advanced intelligent transportation (IT) system

Unlike current Electric Vehicles LEAF is designed to be a practical compact family car with good interior space, driving dynamics and equipment levels all comparable to its conventional counterparts. Its driving range combined with its charge management IT system give LEAF real world usability.

 - 5 doors / 5 seats
 - 100 mile range on a single charge
 - Top speed 90mph
 - 80Kw electric motor with 280nm torque
 - Mobile/PC connectivity to enable remote operations (including charging)

So far we have received high levels of interest from the press with good coverage including the front page of the Financial Times and MSN Online and articles in the Sun, Guardian and Independent.

Only a select few journalists have driven the car but comments have been very positive:

“What’s interesting about the way it goes down the road relative to a car with a combustion engine is a) how responsive it is to throttle inputs, b) how quiet it is, and c) how torquey it is at pootling speeds.  There is barely any delay when you hit the throttle in this car; you just get seamless and serious acceleration almost exactly a tenth of a second after you’ve asked for it.” – Matt Saunders, Autocar

The Nissan LEAF is set to land in Europe in 2011.
