Environment and Sustainability

At Hammonds we are very concerned about the environment and all the sustainability issues.

We realised quite early that we needed to play our part in helping with this global issue.

To this end about 18 months ago we set up our own environmental group and started to make a plan of how we could contribute.

Our objective is to ensure that we understand and effectively manage the actual and potential environmental impact of our activities.  We also comply with all the legal requirements in areas where we carry out business to reduce the impact of damage to the environment.

"Reduce, Recycle and Re-use"

The initial aim was to achieve the BS 8555:2003 standard.

What Actions and Progress Have We Made?

  • Reduction of our waste was a priority and we bought a specialist baler to enable us to bale all the cardboard and plastic created across all our business.  This also included all paper.  The bales are now despatched to specialist re-cycling companies.
  • To collect all the above waste around the group we bought an electric Mega Van.  This van has ZERO emissions.  The batteries are charged overnight and cost 1.7p per charge.
  • Waste oil, contaminated water, antifreeze, oil and fuel filters, redundant computer equipment, batteries, tyres and scrap metal is all separated and disposed of by reputable re-cycling companies.
  • In our Accident Repair Centre we now use waterborne paints which are solvent free.  We are also using new Ultra Violet Light technology to reduce our energy consumption in the vehicle painting process.
  • Recently we invested in heating control systems that monitor our heating energy used in our workshops.  Working with The Carbon Trust our estimated consumption reduction of gas will be 40%.

What Are The Vehicle Manufacturers Doing?

Actually, the answer is a great deal.

Every manufacturer that we represent is committed to reducing the CO2 emission levels of their cars and increasing the efficiency of their engines.

Land Rover has been a particular leader in this area and its website describes in great detail what it has been doing.  Their carbon offset programme is unique and it also means that at our Land Rover site we are also carbon neutral.
